Bedbugs are a member of the insect family. Adults are 1/5 to 1/4 inch long and 1/8 inch wide. They are usually reddish brown with some variation in color. Bedbugs need blood meals to survive and humans are the preferred host but will feed on other animals including dogs and cats.
Sometimes the first sign of a bedbug infestation is red swollen areas on the skin that are itchy. However, not everyone in the household may develop a red itchy area after being bit. Thus many people delay checking for bedbugs.
Bedbugs are commonly found by pulling the sheet off the corner of a mattress and looking for the bugs or blackish debris from the bugs. Although the insects are called “bed” bugs due to being found in beds, they can still be found up to 20 feet or more away from the host. Therefore, bedbugs can be found anywhere in a house including couches, chairs, etc., not just beds.
After a blood meal, the bedbug will retreat to places including but not limited to mattresses, behind drapes, pictures, behind walls. Therefore it is important to have a thorough inspection.
